Privacy and cookies

This site collects very little. What it does collect, and how to stop it, is set out below.

Who we are

Asterisk Investments is the data controller for this website. We can be reached at info@asterisk.investments.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages are read and how people arrive. It runs only if you accept cookies. If you reject them, or ignore the banner, it does not run and no analytics cookies are set.

Where it does run, Google acts as our processor and may process the data outside the United Kingdom under its own safeguards. We do not use it for advertising: advertising storage and personalisation are switched off at all times, including after you accept.

Google deletes the event data it holds for us after 14 months, after which only aggregate reporting remains.

Cookies

These are the only cookies this site sets, and only once you have accepted.

Cookies set by this site
Name Set by Purpose Expires
_ga Google Analytics Distinguishes one visitor from another. 2 years
_ga_SEBXYPW691 Google Analytics Keeps track of a single visit to the site. 2 years

Your choice itself is remembered in your browser's local storage under asterisk-consent. It is not a cookie and is not sent to us or to anyone else. Clearing your browsing data removes it, and the banner returns.

You can change your decision at any time using the Cookies link in the footer of any page.

One other thing is remembered the same way. If you close the bar inviting you to join the weekly update, that is recorded under asterisk-promo-dismissed so we do not ask you again. Like the choice above it is local storage rather than a cookie, it is never sent to us, it is not used to recognise you, and clearing your browsing data removes it.

Server logs

Our web server records each request: the page, the time, the result, the referring page and the browser's description of itself. This happens whether or not you accept cookies, because it is how the server runs and how we keep the site secure.

IP addresses are masked before they are written. The final part of the address is replaced with zero, so what reaches the disk identifies a rough network and not a person or a device. There is no unmasked address stored anywhere to be lost, disclosed or requested. These logs are kept for fourteen days and then deleted automatically.

Email

If you email us, we hold that message and your address in order to reply and to keep a record of the conversation.

Writing to us does not put you on a mailing list. There is one, and there is a form on this site inviting you to join it, both described below. You are on it only if you filled that form in and asked to be.

The claims.company mailing list

Once a week we review the events of the week in UK general insurance and give some data driven perspectives. That is the whole of it: one email a week, and nothing else sent to you. Asterisk Investments is the data controller for the list, as it is for this website.

It is one list across both of our sites. You can join it here or on claims.company, which is a division of Asterisk Investments, and either way your address is held in the same place by the same controller. We record which site you joined from, and that is the only difference between the two.

You are on it only if you filled in one of those forms and asked to be. Consent is the lawful basis and it is never bundled with anything else: nothing on either site is withheld from you for declining, and the book offered on claims.company is not held back behind the form.

We store your address, the date and time you gave it, which page it came from, and the wording you agreed to, so that we can show what you were told at the time. We also store the network your request came from with the final part of the address replaced by zero, exactly as the server logs above do. We do not store your name, your employer, or anything about your device.

The list is held on our own server rather than with a mailing list provider. It is not sold, shared, rented or passed to anyone else, and it is never used to advertise to you anywhere else. Your address itself reaches nobody but us: the form posts to this site, not to somebody else's service.

On claims.company, where there is no analytics at all, signing up tells nobody but us and nothing else happens. On this site, the analytics described above is running if you accepted cookies, and it will record that you visited the page in the ordinary way. It is not told your address, and it is not used to advertise to you.

Ask us to stop at any time, by email to hello@claims.company or info@asterisk.investments, and we will take you off without asking why. Every message we send carries the same route out. When we remove you we delete your address and keep only a one-way fingerprint of it, which cannot be turned back into an address, so that we do not add you again by mistake.

We keep your address until you ask us to stop. We also review the list at least every two years and delete addresses we are no longer using, so consent given once does not sit on a server indefinitely.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you may ask what personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or ask for it in a portable form. Write to info@asterisk.investments and we will respond within one month.

If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
