A driver asks an AI assistant about car insurance and gets a quote without opening a comparison site. Since 29 October that is possible in the UK.
Ageas has launched an esure plugin inside ChatGPT that asks a few questions, produces a car insurance quote in a couple of minutes and hands the customer to the esure website to buy, according to the Ageas announcement. The firm cites YouGov research that one in five people who search online now start with an AI assistant for specific questions, and a quarter of AI search users use assistants to compare options.
This is not a side project for a small brand. Ageas paid £1.295bn for esure and completed the deal in September 2025, creating a UK personal lines insurer with over 7 million customers across motor and home, as its completion statement set out. Esure was the direct, digital half of that purchase.
Hold those two facts together. A £1.3bn bet on direct distribution is now testing a channel that the insurer does not own. For a decade the fight in UK motor has been over the price comparison page, where the cheapest price usually wins the click. An assistant chooses differently. It answers a question, and the insurer that shows up inside that answer gets the first conversation.
Ageas calls the plugin a testing ground, which is the honest description. The commercial question is whether conversational quotes convert better or worse than a comparison click, and what the platform will charge once the traffic is worth something. Comparison sites built a business on charging for each customer they pass on. There is no reason to expect AI platforms to be more generous.
The early movers will at least know their own conversion numbers when that negotiation starts. Everyone else will be pricing a channel they have never measured.
